The Margaret E. Garland & John Jack Murtagh Memorial Scholarship
is awarded to two outstanding 2026 high school graduates who will be participating in the FPEA homeschool graduation. Candidates should be interested in exploring Irish Heritage through the lens of Christianity.
Suggested Essay Themes (choose ONE):
Option 1: Celtic Cross (Most Iconic - Recommended as Primary)
"The Celtic Cross, with its distinctive circle intersecting the Christian cross, symbolizes the fusion of ancient Irish heritage and Christian faith—representing eternity, God's eternal love, and the harmony of heaven and earth.
In a short essay (300-500 words), describe a Celtic Christian symbol (such as the Celtic Cross) that resonates with you. Explain its historical connection between Irish culture and Christianity, and share what it means personally for your faith journey and future aspirations."
Option 2: Triquetra/Trinity Knot
"The Triquetra (or Trinity Knot), an ancient Celtic design of three interlocking arcs, was adopted by early Irish Christians to represent the Holy Trinity-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-while echoing themes of eternal life and unity. In a short essay (300-500 words), reflect on a Celtic symbol like the Triquetra that bridges Irish heritage and Christian belief.
Discuss its meaning in the context of Celtic Christianity and how it inspires or strengthens your personal faith."
Option 3: Shamrock (Tied to St.Patrick - Great for Accessibility)
"According to legend, St. Patrick used the shamrock—a three-leafed plant native to Ireland—to illustrate the Holy Trinity to the Irish people, blending Celtic reverence for nature with Christian doctrine. In a short essay (300-500 words), explore a Celtic symbol (such as the shamrock) and its role in connecting Irish culture to the Christian faith. Describe what this symbol teaches you about God and how it influences your spiritual growth."
